NFT: Valentine's Day tomorrow

oghwga : 2/13/2018 9:53 am
Stupidest day of the year IMO. My wife always told my sons when they were younger that if they had a girlfriend, break up with her before the day if she expects some kind of acknowledgement.

Love to see all the panicked, sweaty, husbands at the food store buying up shitty roses or boxes of chocolates at the last minute.

My wife gets a hand signed card every year from the sheet below and I know she treasures it.

Anybody here waste money on chocolates or flowers?

I started hearing this mantra from a few friends. I just laugh.

What's the big deal? If you have half a decent relationship with your better half, it's not a huge deal, or it's exactly the right amount of a deal.

Why not get flowers, or a vacuum cleaner, or take her out and make her feel good? It's all positive if you play it well.

If she's a psycho about this "holiday," maybe it's time to re-evaluate?

Two cents' worth from a doofus who completely out-kicked his coverage more than 22 years ago and she still likes me most days, especially when I clean the damn cat box.
its not stupid if

In Michigan we get a double dose. Later in the year we have "Sweetest Day", which is no different than Valentines day (except that it is not named after a Saint)

20 years, so we no longer care about Valentine's Day.

But when you're dating or new in a relationship, not acknowledging Valentine's Day (even if the significant other says "don't buy me anything for Valentine's Day, it's stupid, it's a Hallmark holiday") can be a relationship ender, even for the more pure hearted woman.
My wife couldn't care less about it....
Britt in VA : 2/13/2018 10:08 am : link
but I like to take opportunities to show her how much I love her.

Now, I do agree that it's fairly contrived holiday, but I still don't mind it.

The restaurants will be flooded tomorrow.

Solid advice.

Years 1-2 you wanna spend $$$

3,4,5... spend $$

After year 5 spend $ on a card, maybe some roses, go out to dinner. That's all. No materialistic gifts..
Best day of the year.

Ha, nailed it. This is my 10 year and I got my wife and 5 year old daughter a dozen roses, chocolates and a teddy bear from 1-800 Flowers. We'll go out for a bite to eat Friday night as well, but it stays really simple.

superspynyg : 2/13/2018 10:40 am : link
going out to eat is a huge hassle. Places have pre set menus.

I sent my wife flowers to her office only because her one coworker for some reason always trys to one up my wife (who is slightly higher than her career wise) she is annoying and is always blabbing about how her husband doles on her all the time.

So I at least sent flowers. Other than that a card and home cooked meal.

I had a question
sshin05 : 2/13/2018 10:42 am : link
is it always men getting something for their significant other? Can't or shouldn't it be both ways???
Valentine's Day is contrived. But it's also nice to earmark some time

to spend with your significant other.

We don't go crazy gift wise. Just some thoughtful little stuff. We don't do dinner out because the reservation competition is nuts and FFS it's a wednesday this year. We usually plan a nice night out on the weekend before or after.

I used to have a real beef with VDay because of a relationship I had that went south in a way that tarnished it. Now, I love it.

Florists have to pay a lot more for the flowers. Production costs are much higher. Producing and delivering such a large volume of flowers for a single day is expensive.

They do pay a little more, but there is plenty of profiteering. My ex-sis-in-law used to run a florist shop, and it was by far their biggest day of the year.

The pre set menus are a pain in the ass. On a normal Valentine's day, while restaurants are busy, you typically do less business than a normal Saturday night. I don't do a set menu for two reasons. First, people really don't want them, and second, nothing sucks more than planning a set menu, and having it snow. You are then left with a lot of food that isn't on your regular menu, forcing you to sell it as specials for the next few days. I think your better off just offering a couple nice specials on Valentine's day.

lol ... we have a handful of very furry pets and she actually asked for a new hi-tech whatever the name of those animal-fur-crazy-ass-expensive vacuum cleaners are for Christmas ... her birthday ..,. now Valentine's Day. Me? I've kinda ignored it all, as a "gift," anyway.

you know before marrying a girl what type she is, so if you sign up for someone high maintenance, that's on you. Same for long-term dating. Valentine's Day isn't as great as some high maintenance women make it out to be but it isn't nearly as bad a grumpy cheap dudes make it out to be. Like anything, there is a middle ground.

It was a fun day when my wife and I were dating. Now 13/14 years later it isn't a big deal but its nice to do something to remind ourselves how things were when we were in college, no kid, no responsibilities, etc.

My husband and I do celebrate Valentine's Day but certainly not in an overly serious way but we're also still quasi-newlyweds having been married less than three years. I actually got my husband this awesome set of every R2D2 unit that have appeared in all of the Star Wars movies. I found it around Christmas but had already done all of my shopping for him so I got it as his Valentine's Day gift and I am very excited to give it to him (and not that people NEED a holiday to surprise someone with a fun gift but it was a holiday I knew we would acknowledge anyway). We likely won't go out to dinner and if we do, it will be to the local diner where we will actually be able to be seated and won't be stuck ordering from a specific, overly-priced menu. I do not expect to receive flowers but I think he will get me something. And guys, think about it this way: if you participate in Valentine's Day, you might be more likely to benefit from the reciprocal holiday that takes place on March 14th...
I've been married almost 29 years

My wife doesn't want flowers or candy. She just wants me to write her a nice note. I can handle that. I'm good at it. Then, I'm going to go see The Bottle Rockets. Probably without her because she hates the lead singer's voice.

I'm confused by Valentines Day. Isn't it actually meant for single people to secretly declare their love for an unsuspecting individual with an anonymous card? When did it become a commercial smugfest for unimaginative couples who need reminding to spoil their partners at least once a year not including birthdays.

that your birthday falls on Valentine's Day. That's me. And it sucks. (I'm female, btw). I can't go out and have a nice dinner for my BD because every placed is jammed and the prices are jacked up. And forget about all of the other nonsense associated with VD. It wasn't so bad when I was a kid. But now? Hate it all. Stupid holiday.
