NFT: Rant on NBC Olympics coverage

Gross Blau Oberst : 2/11/2018 10:35 am
The Olympics are here with more than 100 sporting events to watch and enjoy. Pure sport. Pure competition. A plethora of sport to select and watch.

True, unless you live in the United States. And suffer under NBCís monopoly on coverage. View the games NBC style or donít view. That is the only choice.

With over 100 events in the winter games, NBC elects to show a select few and with a heavy dose human-interest coverage. Too much talk and too much analystís TV time. Not enough of the sport itself.

In years past I could turn to EuroSport or Sky Sports 1 for better and alternative coverage. Not this year. Those sights are blocked by NBC exclusive coverage rights for those living in the continental United States. Viewers who want to see something more of the Olympics beyond NBCs coverage are denied.

Even the official Olympics webpage requires viewers to select a coverage provider (e.g. Comcast, AT& T, Verizon, Youtube, Hulu, etc.) if you have an account with one of them, only to receive NBC coverage once again.

Viewers have no choice, other than NBC. And NBCs coverage sucks. The NBC coverage is not about the sport. It is more about the tangent connections to the sport. The USA centric viewpoints are also in direct conflict with the spirit of the Olympics. True sport lovers lose out and have little alternative.

Highly annoying, manipulative, and restrictive.

Wait. What?

To non sports fans, mostly women. Do what I do. Turn it on for your wife and fall asleep to ice dancing also known as the sport of figure skating.

Just get a VPN

and watch the UK coverage. Itís much better.
Download the NBC sports app

You can watch every live event going on at that particular time...you don't have to watch just NBC or nbcsn

Even if I were interested, I couldn't stand the coverage for all the reasons cited. It seems networks always go down their preordained path with coverage of most events, whether they be sports related or not. Looks to be more about selling (commercials) and advancing a story line or point of view, than the actual event. I probably will skip the TV and just read the results the next day. Good comments, Colonel!

Joeinpa, I'm not an expert in the 'sport', but I'm pretty sure they offer both Ice Dancing, and Figure Skating - so exciting!!! Plus as GBO posted above, you get to learn about the plight of single parents getting up before dawn, to drive 75 miles, so their kid can have ice access.
Thanks for the VPN advice

Looking at PCMagazine reviews of them now. NordVPN seems to be the editors choice.

Anyone have a VPN contract? Advice?

New content for me, and I need to learn more before diving in.

thing is that when I was a kid back in the dark ages, it was only on one channel... ABC... yet somehow they managed to get in all the major events PLUS show the bulk of the medal ceremonies (even the ones the U.S. didn't medal in). The coverage has gotten progressively worse over the years.

BTW, my wife can't stand the human interest stories either so I'm not sure it is selling with women.
Watching thru the NBC sports app is the best way. You can watch

I'm pretty sure the snowboarders from every country are no different than the Americans. The sport still has a very young personality and a counterculture vibe, even as an Olympic event.
I think it sucks too...
trueblueinpw : 2/11/2018 1:08 pm : link
Seems like a lot of ads - which yeah I know it figures. Itís seems like all Iíve seen so far is team ice skating and that one snow boarding event. Iíve seen all kinds of stuff on the North Korean athletes - which I get and itís kind of cool on the one hand - but - I donít know man, that NK regime is one of the most brutal and violent regeims on the planet. I donít want to mix politics with the sports but the North Koreans and the systemic state mandated cheating of the Russians is kind of hard to miss. As far as the human interest stuff, Iím a sucker for it. And I think itís kind of silly to be offended by a 17 year old swearing - consider the real depravity in the world maybe? Anyway, donít have a lot of solutions just bitching.
BBC and VPN
Bramton1 : 2/11/2018 1:38 pm : link
Unfortunately, this option doesn't work well, and BBC is blocking a lot of VPNs. I'm using IPVanish and connecting to a London server, but the BBC Sport app still tell me their content only works in the UK.

ExpressVPN supposedly works, but I have no intention of paying for a second VPN to get this to work.

North Korean version of the Olympics. I could just imagine it. Kim Jong Un participated and won gold in every event while the devils of the USA finished dead last.

Dan Patrick has alluded to this as well (to the extent that he can as a fellow NBC employee).
I'll point out that Costas stepped aside

from his Olympics duty in February 2017 and the big story about his comments on the NFL didn't happen until late 2017. Not saying that it's not true, but the timelines don't match up.
Two things
Ron from Ninerland : 2/12/2018 1:02 pm : link
1. Everybody should thank god that its NBC covering the Olympics instead of ESPN.

2. When has the coverage been any different ? Ever since I was a kid, Olympic coverage in the U.S. has been heavily tilted towards American athletes, events in which American athletes excelled, human interest stories involving primarily Americans and a shitload of commercials .

The 1980 Olympics which Jimmy Carter boycotted weren't even broadcast in America
Was it NatGeo, did that fluff piece

In North Korea? Or nbc?

Their guy goes Skiing in an empty resort. Says 'hey, I gotta tell ya, this ain't bad'.

I guess. Maybe he also likes mud wrestling out back at sobribor...in the ashes and none chips. What a sporting fella.

Later, he's at the boys Olympic dive training unit. Little north korean boys dive all day ..every day.

He asks his handler:

"gee. What if they get scared and don't dive?"

She gives him a dead look for the ages:

("Are Americans really this stupid?"

Yeah, ...we shoot the kid and leave his body right in front of the dormitory for the other urchins to see, then we drive to the nearest village and grab another starving little one.....idiot....what the fuck did you think we do? .")

None.. Bone...

If it makes you feel any better, the Olympic channel is showing hardly any actual Olympic events so far during the games.

I don't know about other providers, but FiOS has a fair amount of Olympics content available on demand too.

Absolutely slaughterised her snowboard half pipe. Up to that point highest was like 7.65....she nails a 9.375.

Even now closest are 8. something.

Snowboard half pipe. 17 years old. USA girls rock.

I don't think it's all that historically significant. They seem to do this every now and again. They marched under a unified flag at the 2000, 2004, and 2006 Games too.

You may want to watch closer or get your eyes checked. Her score was 93.75 not 9.375.
These Olympics are not intriguing me
SomeFan : 2/13/2018 10:21 am : link
I think it is partly the overproduced nature of the NBC coverage. It feels like manufactured excitement. It would be refreshing if they show an event without the need for a human interest story that often seems strained or trite. I remember the 1980 games for the Miracle on Ice. Huge drama without the need to embellish. I remember Franz Klammer winning the downhill in 1976. He did it under intense pressure in his home country in a sport that your fate changes in micro-seconds. In my view, Klammer's gold is one of the greatest and most underrated performances in sports history. These Winter games have no organic drama like either of those, albeit those put the bar high.

None of those games were IN Korea though, and, while NK has been a hot button politically for several years, it seems to be even more so now (although I concede that may be recency bias).

It's not a throwaway, IMO - there's some real significance to it this year.
Haven't been following
Bill L : 2/13/2018 11:32 am : link
but the events they show in the evening (which I assume is the marquee stuff), are those live or do they know the results in advance and are just pretending? With the time difference, I can see it either way although the Olympics would have to re-jigger their schedule to accommodate us dirty Americans.
