So is Darrell Bevell the favorite now?

adamg : 2/10/2018 5:18 pm
Guy has a ton of experience and a ring as a OC. Has experience (and success) working with a young QB in Russell Wilson. Wouldn't be a bad hire imo.

Who else could it be?
Have the Giants even shown any interest?

Have they shown interest in anyone other than Stefanski?

It seems like we're not going to hear a thing out of the FO.

I don't think the OC will have any impact the skillset they choose at QB. I do think it's telling that their top 2 choices for OC are known for working with QBs...

Personally, I prefer Staley but it's doubtful the Eagles even grant the Giants permission. Bevell would be fine in my book.

I don't see how a 2nd/3rd choice OC will dictate our draft.

Shurmur will be running the offense so, it's not as important what Bevell has run in the past. Shumur's offense fits Eli and that's what matters. Also, there is no guarantee Philly will allow the Giants to even interview Staley.

I know he has a ring but he is also responsible for calling possibly the worst play in SB history and not just running Lynch for the winning TD.

Hard to minimize a guys whole career over one play, but this was a biggie in the biggest game, at its most critical moment and he spit the bit.

No thanks

Just because Bevell built an offense around Russell Wilson doesn't mean that that's the only offense he runs. He was OC under Brad Childress in Minnesota, so he has ties to the Andy Reid coaching tree, and that time in Minny included Favre's renaissance year in 2009 (that offense ranked 5th in yards, 2nd in points). That season with Favre might be reason enough to think he could be the right fit for Eli.
How about Frank Reich?

Frank Reich is already an OC for the Eagles. The only way he leaves town is if he lands the HC gig in Indy.

Certainly not to come here and NOT call plays.

This will be Shurmur's call

and he knows what he wants from his OC. Think he wants someone who has expierience to run the offense according to his plan. Not theirs. He has been around for a while so keep the faith.

I'd rather keep a competent NFL offensive lineman in his contract year, thanks. This isn't as bad as the king's ransom you wanted to give up for Gerrit Cole, but have you ever even considered not going out of your way to give up more than necessary?

In the case of Ereck Flowers it's addition by subtraction. Trading him saves the Giants the $2.4M cost of releasing him.
p.s.--I don't know if Chance Adams and Clint Frazier (and a lower level prospect) qualifies as a king's ransom. Time will tell. I just hope the Yankees aren't regretting it when October rolls around and they're again facing the Astros for the right to go to the World Series.

How much dead money would the Giants sustain by releasing Flowers? I just don't think it makes any sense to release Flowers before they see how he does at RT or RG. Robert Gallery was a bust at both LT and RT but he carved out a very solid career once he moved inside. Perhaps Flowers will experience a rebirth once he is moved to a more natural position.

I don't want to miller the thread any further than I already did, but you definitely advocated giving up even more than that for Cole.

And I don't see how Flowers is addition by subtraction when we already have three starting OL entering FA, and Flowers actually showed improvement last season. Should he be moved from LT? Probably. Should he be moved off the roster? No, IMO. And definitely not for an unproven OC who won't even be calling plays.
Releasing Flowers at this point
Modus Operandi : 2/12/2018 1:48 am : link
Would be idiotic. We have enough holes to worry about without getting rid of our low cost LT.

Where are you going to find a new starting LT for only 2.4M?

There's been so many different conversations on the topic, I don't recall specific trade options I suggested, but I never included Torres, Sheffield, or Florial. It was always Frazier, Adams, and a mid-to-lower level guy like Tate, Wade, or Estrada (my thinking being any time you can add a 27-year old starting pitcher with ace-level upside without giving up any of your top three prospects, it's a good day). If I included Andujar, I probably subtracted Frazier (at worst I may have suggested Adams, Frazier, and Andujar, but I don't think so). And if you're going all the way back to last July, I may have included Sheffield over Adams because there was a time when I had higher expectations for Adams, but no longer. It's not like a scout these guys myself, my opinions go up or down based on the latest BA, MLB, and Keith Law recommendations.

My reading of the situation (which may or may not prove correct) is that Gettleman would've cut Flowers along with Hart last December, but for the fact that Flowers's $2.4M salary in 2018 is guaranteed and he has trade value. What they get in return isn't as important as shedding the $2.4M.

When Gettleman talked about changing the culture, I think guys like Flowers were who he had in mind. Another team may feel they can light a fire under him or find the right fit for him and they may be right. If the Rams could get something in return for Greg Robinson, maybe the Giants can get something in return for Flowers. I'm sure the Giants weren't the only team to have a 1st round grade on Flowers in 2015.

the Pats. A guy that dumb doesn't deserve another shot.

Enough with the stupidity about Flowers. They have him another year cheap, he's one of the few OLs they actually have uner contract, and he just might become competent or better in a differnt schem that actually helps the OTs.

Anyone who thinks they can trade him is a bigger idiot.

Yes. It's the single dumbest thing I've ever seen in sports in the biggest spot. That was a Buck Showalter move: show them how smart you are instead of winning the game.

The game they won was easy. It was a blowout from start to finish. Denver was completely overmatched.

the problem is there's a high likelihood that it wasn't his call. I'm not into taking what players say as gospel but if you do, it was Carroll that made that call.

So if that's the case he DIDN'T make the single dumbest call you've ever seen. Either way basing whether or not you like a guy because of 1 call and ignoring the thousands of others he made is pretty bushleague.
