3 losses? Tom Brady/Montana debate

Eli/Peyton Debate - would you rather 2-0 than 2-2?

SB losses are the most devestating defeats! I would rather not go than to go and lose.

I would love it if Eli was able to lead us to as many Super Bowls as Brady has. You gotta be in it to win it. If youíre not, you donít have a shot. Iíd rather have the shot and lose than no chance at all.

Was I upset when we lost to Baltimore? Absolutely. But 29 other teams didnít even have a chance to be Super Bowl champions and of you think they werenít all jealous, even after we got our asses kicked, youíre crazy.
That one Super Bowl loss was painful

The logic is that 5 is better than 4.

I think people understand that making it is a successful season. Only one team gets to be truly happy. What is better in your opinion? 3-13? One and done? Losing in the conference championships? Give me the two weeks of excitement and the promise going into the next year over this trainwreck of a season.

ok with it? You said would you rather be 4 - 0 or 5 - 3.

It's not even remotely close. I'd rather have 5 SB wins than 4. Period. It's a simple math equation.

If those 5 wins means you go 8 times and lose 3 it's still better than having 4 SB wins.

your post had nothing to do with being 0 - 4 like Kelly.

While I don't take consolation or moral victories in losing a SB I agree with the other poster in relative terms I'll take it over going 3 - 13, but it's irrelevant this discussion for me comes down to 5 > 4. And it ends there.
so you'd rather be the browns or Lions

Yes. I'd rather have 5 SB wins than 4 SB wins.

if they lost them both to the Giants then we can talk.

I'd rather be 6 - 1 in SB's than 5 - 5.

Know why? because 6 > 5.

While losing sucks, I agree with others who would look forward to the chance at losing.

So while it isn't as wide a gap (for me) as 5 > 4; 2 - 2 > 2 - 0. Plus it means you enjoyed a January of playoff wins (2 or 3 in the year you lost the SB) and is usually a sign your team is competitive and fun to watch.

So if you think of it in terms of would you prefer 3 - 13 vs a SB loss, I think if you say 3 - 13 you're a psychopath. No offense.
I donít get the argument actually
Steve L : 2/7/2018 6:52 pm : link
The whole point of the NFL season is to win the super bowl. To do that, you have to get there. Someone is going to lose. Just get there and you have a chance. If you donít, you canít reach your goal.
A Super Bowl win
an_idol_mind : 2/7/2018 7:04 pm : link
is the best feeling in sports. The more the better, even if they come with losses.

And I'd rather go and lose than not go. The loss against the Ravens sucked, but getting there was a lot of fun.
But that said,
an_idol_mind : 2/7/2018 7:06 pm : link
I don't think I'd trade the Giants' fortunes for the Pats'. Our Super Bowl wins were quite a bit more special. (Though I'm obviously biased.)
They give the Conference Champ a trophy for a reason
twostepgiants : 2/7/2018 7:22 pm : link
It means you accomplished something. It matters

Its better to go than not to go.

Your logic seems to state that SF or Montana is better than NE or Brady because they lost earlier. That doesnt make sense.

SF lost earlier. They lost in 85, 86, 87, 90, 91, 92, 93, etc. they were knocked out of the playoffs earlier. Its that simple

Would NE have a better team if they lost to the Jags? Or the Chargers in 07 in the AFC title game? Or the Ravens in 11 AFC title game?

This logic makes no sense.

The Pats & Brady have went further more times than any other team & QB in league history.
Is this question serious?

arniefez : 2/7/2018 8:12 pm : link
That's a lot of championship game wins since 1985.
This is the Mike Francessa argument
mattnyg05 : 2/7/2018 8:14 pm : link
that I donít understand. Heíd take Montanaís career over Brady (which is fine) but his reasoning is that Montana never lost a Super Bowl and Brady has lost 2 (now 3).

I never got this. Is losing in the Super Bowl worse than losing in the playoffs? Wouldnít you rather get into the Super Bowl and lose than lose in the second round of the playoffs? I donít get the logic there. Never losing in the Super Bowl is a badge of honor, yes, but a season where you lead your team to the big game and lose is better than losing prior to that or not making the playoffs.
I think a better question would have been to compare the 49ers
wgenesis123 : 2/7/2018 8:16 pm : link
and Giants in NFC championship games. I do my best not to remember the 2000 Super Bowl against the Ravens. I figure the Giants are 9-1 in big games (NFC championship and Super Bowls) and that is pretty good. Finishing second sucks big time, would rather take 4-0 than 5-3. Losing 3 times is a big price to pay for one more win. Now if you asked no Super Bowls or 1-3, I would take 1-3. I guess its all perspective which can change.
I'd rather have more titles
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/7/2018 8:17 pm : link
So 5-3 over 4-0.
If he would have said heíd take Montana
mattnyg05 : 2/7/2018 8:17 pm : link
Because his teams were mostly lights out in the Super Bowl and they blew the doors off of teams whereas the Patriots have never won a Super Bowl by more than one score, that I could get on board with.
I was actually going to say 4-0
BestFeature : 2/7/2018 8:26 pm : link
Losing Super Bowls is heart breaking and even if you win 5 it doesn't get much easier to lose and doing so 3 times is brutal. That said 5 years after the 8 I'd look more fondly at the 8 Super Bowls even if 3 were losses since it's such an accomplishment to get to the Super Bowls. So I guess my answer is it depends from perspective you're looking at it.

Are you talking about in the sense that losing makes you a loser or in the sense that losing hurts? Because it sounds like the first one. And if it is the first that's a bit of a ridiculous argument because if you're 4-0 that means you had 4 other seasons where you lost BEFORE the Super Bowl.
I'd rather have the 5 wins
Matt M. : 2/7/2018 8:51 pm : link
But, this is obviously a flawed argument, since the original poster , who is supposed to be a Giants fan, doesnt seem to know the Giants lost a SB in the mix.

Montana 4-0 Brady 5-3
Eli 2-0 Payton 2-2

Not Giants... of course I know weíre 4-1... hence my opinion of rather not making it. Losing the Super Bowl is the same as finishing 8-8 or 10-6 and not making the playoffs. whatís the prize for second place? Also not in the sense that your team is a loser... based on those loses hurt and are magnified.... pats fans even winning 5 have scars of the three losses especially 18-1!!!! If I were a pats fan I wouldíve rather lost in the playoffs that year than to make it undefeated and lose in the SB! They are still salty over that!

but a former co-worker from years ago/Patriots fan posted on Facebook last week how he enjoys the yearly whining from fans of the other 31 teams while his Pats celebrate yet another championship. I responded that I couldn't speak for the other 30 teams, but as far as the Giants are concerned, this is still a Nicks & Cruz game; make them go to Manningham.

Then I posted the "We're only going to score 17 points/ha ha, ok!" meme.

painful to me than losing the SB that one time. So, my vote is definitely that I'd rather not make it to the SB then make it and lose. However, I get that when you make it - you don't know the outcome ahead of time so making it is a necessary step. But...if you knew ahead of time that they were going to lose, I'd rather not make it.

A post a few days ago asked about worst sports year and I would immediately point to any year my favorite team lost the SB, NBA Finals, or Cup Finals - without question those years are the toughest. To get that close and lose stays with you for a while.

Every additional week your team is alive in the playoffs is a positive. I donít get the premise youíd want your team eliminated earlier to save you as a fan heartache from a loss in the big game.

Hell do I wish the Mets won the WS in 2006? Of course but itís not like I wish they missed the playoffs or the NLDS just to save the heartache from how they went out...

Title game appearances, 15 division titles in 18 yrs,10 wins or more in 16 of 17 seasons, 12 of which had 12 or more wins (including the last 8 in a row) anyday. We had 2 SBs and 8 yrs of excellence under Parcells in between 17 years of shit from '64-'81 and another 8 yrs of shit from '91-'99. A lucky run in 2000 to the SB all Fassel had. Sure the 2 SBs were great under TC, but from 2009-2017 they made the playoffs just TWICE and had 4 losing records.
