2018 NFL mock draft: Baker Mayfield back in play at No. 1

M.S. : 2/6/2018 9:48 am
A Mock a day keeps the winter blues away.

Baker Mayfied #1 to the Browns; Sam Darnold #2 to the Giants.

And everyone's franchise savior, Saquon Barkley, falls to #7 to the Bucs.

Browns are not drafting Mayfield #1. Not after Manziel. My guess is that they take Darnold, which increases the likelihood the Giants trade down, take Barkley, or take Chubb.
PFF for what it's worth says Mayfield is the most accurate
Ira : 2/6/2018 9:53 am : link
of the top qb's in this draft.

Quote:
Mayfield’s status as the top draft-eligible quarterback in deep accuracy means he ranks ahead of UCLA’s Josh Rosen, USC’s Sam Darnold and Wyoming’s Josh Allen. Rosen, Darnold and Allen have all been mentioned as quarterbacks who will be drafted ahead of Mayfield.

But Mayfield, of course, has shown he is accurate on practically every type of pass. He leads the FBS in completion percentage and also did so last year. After setting an FBS record with a pass efficiency of 196.4 last season, he has posted a mark of 203.8 this year. He also is second in the nation in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

“Everyone’s franchise savior”

Wtf is that about? So anyone that thinks Barkley should be the pick thinks he’s the franchise savior? What about every other player that people are clamoring for? There are about 10 players I’ve seen on this site that people have said they want at 2. Does this make all of them think their pick will be a franchise savior too? Or does that just belong to the Barkley backers?

You're right! Rarely are RBs "franchise saviors" but QBS generally are considered to be. QBs are the highest paid position in the NFL for a reason.Which is why,if the Giants believe one of the QBs available is a "franchise savior",they will draft him with the #2 pick!
The author must be Mayfield's cousin

I want some of the guys Mayfield was throwing to, not Mayfield. 3-7 and 9 yards= preview of coming attractions with Mayfield.

About Barkley
Rjanyg : 2/6/2018 10:58 am : link
I re watched the last game of the season last night. Darkwa and Gallman had a very good day vs. the Redskins and I would say that Gallman is the better back at making moves where Darkwa is more about power than being shifty. The entire O Line was a bunch of back ups ( after Jerry went out early in the 1st quarter. The Washington defensive front is pretty good and we ran the ball extremely well.

All that said, there were countless times that if Darkwa had any wiggle or vision, would have had at least another 50 yards rushing, and Gallman while shifty and runs hard, had a drop that would have been a TD down the right sideline on a wheel route.

These are the things that Barkley, even behind a below average O Line, would have executed.

I expect Gettlemen to add a couple of O Linemen in free agency. I also expect and early draft pick to be an O Lineman. If Barkley is available with the 2nd pick, he could be the piece that puts our offense in overdrive.

Baker Mayfield is absolutely an accurate QB.
There's steam to this
ajr2456 : 2/6/2018 11:13 am : link
Mcloughen is advising the Browns on this upcoming draft and has said he likes Mayfield the most out of the QB's and compared him to Brett Favre.

He made that comment in October - right?
A lot can change between October and now.
I still don't understand the Manziel/Mayfield comparisons
UConn4523 : 2/6/2018 12:07 pm : link
they make no sense, aren't close to the same kind of player. If Mayfield was 6'5" there would be absolutely zero comparison.

Smallish, mobile white QBs with big personalities.

That's why people think they're the same. These people have likely not watched more than 1 series of Mayfield playing @ OK - as these two QB's have virtually nothing else in common.
Id like to start by saying that I don't know much about college
Keith : 2/6/2018 12:14 pm : link
football. In fact, I hate college sports. That being said, Mayfield looks more like Russell Wilson with a little more fire and a little less class if you ask me. Shortish, stocky, strong arms, can create space with their legs.
Can't be.
Dave in Hoboken : 2/6/2018 12:19 pm : link
All of the QB prospects are highly flawed, or something.
Sigh, if free agency is done well
Dave on the UWS : 2/6/2018 12:20 pm : link
then the draft is about the future (not plugging holes) as it should be. If Mayfield was the choice at 2, I would be be fine with it. Shurmur has shown he can tweak his offense to put his QB in the best position to succeed. The only guy I don't want is Allen and it's not that I don't think he has potential. I see him and Webb as very similar as far as strengths and weaknesses go.

Mayfield definitely has some Wilson in his game.

Wilson's lefty clone is going to be starting for Alabama next year.

Side note - Russell Wilson has really become an excellent passer. I get the impression that he's still viewed as a "scrambler" by a lot of people. His legs buy him a lot of time but the guy is really an outstanding quarterback.
Hes fantastic.
Keith : 2/6/2018 12:26 pm : link
I can't believe he wasn't in the conversation for MVP this season.

He really should have been. His line is putrid, and they used about 15 different running backs this year.

He has a few good weapons in the pass game - Doug Baldwin is probably the best slot guy in the league or close, Graham had a nice year and Paul Richardson is a big play machine. But Wilson was really a one man show for that offense much of this season.

(NYG should consider signing Richardson, BTW.. he's a FA this year. This would be a great time to get him. He's on the verge of a pretty big season methinks)
Richardson is a playmaker.
Keith : 2/6/2018 12:34 pm : link
If Eli was the QB in Seattle, they would have been 3-13 and falling apart at the seems. Wilson accounted for what.....95% of their TD's?
.

It was an absurdly high number like that. I forget exactly what the statistic was - it was one of those next gen stats, but basically it said that Wilson had covered over 13,000 yards of ground total throughout the course of the entire season with is something like 7+ miles.

Pretty crazy.

At least half of that had to be running away from his horrible line.

Oh, absolutely. Putrid blocking up front.

Looked just like Andrew Luck in IND before he was hurt. The guy snaps the ball and just starts running because there's a free rusher getting through on nearly every pass attempt.
Anyone who would compare

Manziel and Mayfield has not watched the two guys play. Night and day.
So much of what Manziel did was bail out jump balls

It's not an edit.

That's Russell Wilson's offensive line.
'Not after Manziel'...
Torrag : 2/6/2018 3:51 pm : link
It's never been established Manziel's failure as an NFL QB was tied to his ability on the field. We never got an answer to that question because he was such a trainwreck as a professional athlete. If he had been a different type of man he may well have been a very good QB. Too bad we'll never know.
Didn't the Browns draft a qb last year in the 1st round? Why would

Kizer was always looked at as a long term project due to his age adn inexperience. If they felt strongly that the top QBs were better players than Kizer, and they certainly are, they have a responsibility to take that guy. Especially with the number of high picks they have. Can't have the pick you spent on Kizer be the reason you don't draft a big time QB prospect.

Browns passed on a real QB in the first (Watson) and pissed away a high second round pick on Kizer, who was benched multiple times by ND. Browns are complete morons. They have to start over again this year and pick a QB with their first pick.
